you're a tough guy or a bully. a lot of times it's just the opposite. >> the suspect could face charges of theft under $500. the news keeps on coming. tom fitzgerald now with the news edge at 11:00. >> we are watching winter weather tonight. good afternoon. brian has the night off. a night where a winter storm is brunging plenty of snow to -- bringing plenty of snow to ohio and west virginia tonight before heading our way in the northeast. let's take a live look outside right now, no snow yet, but some local areas could see it in a few hours. we'll check in now on the latest, gary mcgrady in the weather center. >> hey, a few areas up north and west as we'll see here on radar, it looks like some of this is coming in pretty quick to the northwest, western maryland, hagerstown maybe seeing a few flakes in the next 15, 20 minutes.

there's also the possibility some of this is not really reaching the ground out there as we still have fairly dry low levels, but eventually it will and we will get snow around here for just about everybody by overnight tonight. if you're south and east of the city, kind of that line of i- 95, then chances are you're probably going to get maybe a little light snow and then it will be going over to rain. look, for us this is not a big storm. it's going to become a fairly substantial storm once it gets offshore tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. it's going to bring a lot of snow to new england specifically, the coastal areas there really going to get hammered tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. our snow will arrive before sun rise. it starts coming overnight tonight. it is trending now. the new stuff is suggesting maybe a little less snow for d.c., looks like it may get a little more mix with rain by late morning tomorrow morning, early in the afternoon before it shuts off. most of the accumulation which is typical will be north and

west. all precipitation will taper off by late in the day, fairly fast moving storm. we'll give you the specifics in the forecast for the new year and beyond coming up. >> thank you very much. the snowflakes have not started falling yet, but leaders in d.c. say you should be ready when they do. snowplows will start treating streets and bridges at 4 a.m. officials have some tips if you're out driving tomorrow. >> if you do get some accumulation, we do want you to put salt and abrasives down on your walkway, the thing that you can do to help husband is clear your walk. -- help us is clear your walk. just if you're going to drive be very cautious. give yourself plenty of braking distance and take it easy. there's really no rush. >> officials say if you do not have to be on the roads in the morning, it would be better that maybe you wait until the afternoon. after weeks of warnings and

worse case scenarios the president offered a slim glimmer of hope on the fiscal cliff solution today. he met with congressional leaders one on one for a last make it or break it negotiation. fox's ed henry takes a look at where things stand just days away from the fiscal cliff. >> timing is we're out of time. we got to do it now. that's why i said the next 24 hours will be very important. >> reporter: with the nation on the verge of the largest tax increase since toward war 2 president obama called congressional leaders to the white house for one last desperate shot at a -- world war ii, president obama called congressional leaders to the white house for one last desperate shot at a deal. some republicans believe the meeting with the president is really just for show. >> when the president calls congressional leaders to the white house, it's all political theater or they've got a deal. >> reporter: democrats insist the president tried for weeks to get an agreement on plan a, a $4 trillion debt deal, and

after the failure of speaker john boehner's plan b mr. obama has taken the initiative to bring plan c to the meeting today. >> this is not for show. this is a last ditch effort by the president to bring the congressional leaders together to try and get at least a small package, small deal together, before the new year to avoid some of the tax parts of the fiscal cliff and to deal with some of the unexcept issues. >> reporter: that package first unveiled by the president last friday before left for hawaii is a slimmed down bill that would focus on three key areas, keeping tax cuts only for those making $250,000 a year or less, extending unemployment benefits and with the clock ticking it would delay dramatic spending cut until later next year. >> i've asked leaders of congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle class americans, protects unemployment insurance for 2 million americans, and lays the groundwork for further

work on both growth and deficit reduction. that's an achievable goal. >> reporter: after the meeting the president came into the briefing room and told reporters constructive but added he was only modestly optimistic that a deal can be reached by the deadline, a sign that there's a very real possibility we're going off the fiscal cliff. at the white house ed henry, fox news. to the edge in virginia now, a spokesperson for idaho republican senator michael crapo says he will not fight his dui charges. senator crapo got pulled over saturday in alexandria. police say he ran a red light. the senator reportedly registered a blood alcohol level of .11. the legal limit in virginia is .08. sources say the senator consulted an attorney. he is due in court january 4th. the edge on d.c. tonight

where a bank robbery suspect was spotted on a metro surveillance camera. want you to take a look at the man walking in the foreground of this video. the fbi believes he robbed the suntrust bank on h street northwest on wednesday. if you recognize him, you're asked to call police. they're some of the largest gun shows on the east coast and this afternoon hundreds of people waited online to get into the nation's gun show at the dulles expo center in chantilly. remember today marks the two week mark since the shooting tragedy in connecticut. many gun enthusiasts say they worry that new gun control laws could be passed and as a result, gun sales are now booming. >> with all the political issues and all that i think there is more people that weren't interested in guns before and they are now. >> meantime a small group of people gathered outside of a

gun store in district heights, maryland. organizers say guns send too many young people to their graves or prison. the organizers say they may hold a protest at a later time. another big story tonight, over the past two decades more than 60,000 russian children have been adopted into american families, but that could change in a big way based on the latest move by the russian government. fox's amy kellogg has that story. ory. >> reporter: russian president vladimir putin signs a law banning adoptions by americans. it is named after a russian toddler who died after being left in a hot car in virginia by his adoptive parents. >> of translator: as far as i know from the opinion polls, the vast majority of russians are negative about a the doing our children. we need to do it ourselves. >> reporter: but -- adopting our children. we need to do it ourselves.

>> reporter: but the reality is only 18,000 russian families have expressed a desire to take in an orphan. the state department says it regrets this decision along with russia's new restrictions on civil society organizations that work with mile-per-hour partners. the adoption law is really believed -- american partners. the adoption law is really believed is in some way linked to other human rights violators from traveling to the states and freezes their assets. some say you can't link the two laws. translator: i think this law is absolutely outrageous and despicable. this is a law that punishes russian children for $230 million stolen by russian bureaucrats. >> reporter: this boy is the son of a woman with disabilities in russia and the american family that is about to finalize an adoption with him may be his last chance for a home. >> now in our son's case 22

new information being released from the fbi about marilyn monroe revealing that the bureau tried to see if there was any connection between the actress and the communist party. fox's anita vogel has the story. >> reporter: the fbi releasing new information about actress marilyn monroe. according to the records, the

agency was monitoring the movie star for possible ties to communism. >> she had a lot of high profile friends, so she was always under a lot of media scrutiny, but more so because of the people that she was hanging out with and some of these people were possibly connected to the communist party. >> reporter: a large section of the files focusing on the actress' trip to mexico in 1962 and her association with frederick vanderbilt field, one of her communist leaning friends. he was monroe's guide on the trip where she bought furniture for her new home. >> she was spending quite a bit of time with frederick vanderbilt field and he was cut off from his family and actually disinherited from the family wealth because of his extreme leftist views and that also put marilyn monroe in a light that suggested that maybe she did have some communist ideas. >> reporter: the actress died later that year. los angeles authorities concluded her death was a probable suicide, but many still want to know exactly how she died. the fbi files do not show any

information about the agency's investigation on her death. >> it does talk about how there were claims at the time that marilyn monroe didn't take her own life and that she was possibly murdered, but these papers don't reveal any new clues as to what caused her death. >> reporter: the fbi released these files after removing dozens of redactions. the agency never found any proof that monroe was a member of the communist party. public tickets to the inaugural ball will soon be available. some local colleges have been given high honors. fox 5's audrey barnes has your fox 5 top five. >> up first tonight local officials are offering to pick up your christmas tree. no. 5, fairfax county will collect trees the first two weeks of january. d.c. collection begins december 31st. arlington county service begins january 7th. prince george's and montgomery county have already started

picking up trees. loudoun county does not do curbside pickup. no. 4, fatty foods can be just as addictive as drugs. after just six weeks of eating high fat foods mice went into withdrawal went put back on a normal diet. they responded to fatty foods the same as they would to cocaine. no. 3, two virginia colleges and one in maryland are recognized as some of the best values in public higher education. the university of virginia came in as the second best value in the rankings with the college of william & mary coming in fourth. and the university of maryland college park rounding out the top five. no. 2, a strike that could have shut down importants on the east coast has been averted for -- ports on the east coast has been averted for now. the longshoremen's union along the east coast and gulf of mexico says it will extend its contract for 30 days. that prevents a possible strike that could have crippled operations at ports including

and all that stuff. tomorrow it's going to be cold, snowy and i don't want to say we've made real changes to the forecast, but i think we see more clarity in what's going to happen tomorrow. it's just a one day thing and gets out of here sunday. some snow is trying to move into the northwest, a little snow. the pink is a changeover and rain farther back out north and west. once it gets here, it's basically going to be in the form of snow to start late tonight and early tomorrow morning. a lot of moisture is coming in from the west moving at a good clip. it won't stay around long. holding at 38 degrees in town, freezing back out to the western suburbs, manassas 32, gaithersburg 32, frederick 30. there is no question tomorrow morning it's going to be cold enough for all snow around here. the big question is just how much of a changeover are we going to get and how much of a little bit of snow on the ground do we get before that changeover starts to happen? the winter weather advisory is in place. this still does not include d.c., fairfax or prince george's county and then those

counties down to the south, prince william, stafford, spotsylvania, you're out of this thing. it's basically the primary counties up to the north and west. they're almost always in the winter weather advisory when we get this because generally speaking, with this type of setup northwestern counties and western suburbs always get the most amount of snow. tomorrow morning 4 a.m. snow is spreading in and for the most part the transition line will be right across i-95, some snow in the city and back out to the northwest. at 9 a.m. we're still getting snow. the snow line is still south of the city. this is where we'll get the potential for accumulating snow is probably 3:00, 4:00 in the morning until about 10:00 in the morning and then the rain will start to push up with some warmer air coming up into the storm system. it may move about as far as midsection or the middle part of montgomery county, maybe germantown, see the little changeover. extreme northern and northwestern counties will more than likely stay all snow. that's where the totals will be

greater. it gets out of here quickly tomorrow evening. as a matter of fact, we may have a little sunshine poking through as the sun sets. tonight 34. the snow will arrive for everybody, mostly snow in the morning, snow and rain at lunchtime and the snow is gone late in the day. here are the numbers, i think maybe a wet inch in the city, south and east mostly rain and in the farther north and west it may increase to 1 1/2 to 2 inches of notice and out along i-81 you could have between 2 and 5 inches. the 5 inches will be at the higher elevations and then kickoff at fedex on sunday will be 8:20. it's going to be cold with fair skies, chilly and dry, though. we start off at 36. the game ends right around freezing. enjoy this holiday weekend and stay safe, too. of course, new year's eve is coming up and new year's day looks good. hey, something happened tonight that hasn't happened in quite a while. lindsay murphy will tell you what in sports. >> this is the verizon 4g lte sports desk with lindsay

new york rivalrywise and it's definitely a special game, special moment and it's definitely game that's going to go down in the redskins/cowboys history books. >> this is probably the biggest game we've had here in the last 20 years. i know we won it in '99, but it's been a lot of frustration as far as our not performing up to our talents and abilities and it's great to be playing for a division title and knowing you have a chance to be going on in the postseason if we win this game. it's not often virginia tech football team has a forgettable season, but it was like that this year. the hokies barely won a bowl bid by winning their last two games. logan thomas and the hokies today facing rutgers in the russell athletic bowl in orlando, florida. second play from scrimmage, thomas not ready for the snap, but sails by him. he tries to track it down in the end zone but sun able to

make the recovery. rutgers -- but is unable to make the recovery. rutgers does. after three quarters the mow kids had more penalty yards than total offense -- they had more penalty yards than total offense. in o.t. the hokies would convert a field goal. rutgers needs this from 41 yards to tie. it instead it goes wide right. tech rallies to defeat rutgers 13-10 in overtime. virginia tech has now won 12 straight games in the series. coming up bradley beal and the wizards get some air, but is it enough to end their eight- game skid? gary might have hinted at it earlier. highlights are next.
